ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Life in the service of people...

It is very difficult to define some people. There work and achievements become so big that it seems like a dream for others. However, such extraordinary personalities often hide themselves in the veil of simplicity. Rajeev Rai easily fits in this mold. When you dig deeper, you find glimpse of his rare abilities. One can come across many qualities in him, such as a teacher, a manager a guardian and a motivator, but one thing that truly defines him is his ability to connect with various social concerns, which are difficult to find in this materialistic world. His success becomes all the more important because his meteoric rise is not vertical but horizontal as many people who continued believing in his abilities also grew simultaneously.

He was born on 6th September, 1969 at Surahi village. He is merely 41-years-old, and has made his father Raj Narain Rai proud by making immense contributions to the society. Sketching life of such people has never been an easy task.

Rajeev Rai completed his12th from Ballia. After Intermediate, he completed B.Sc (Botany and Zoology) from UP College of Banaras,Varanasi. Then for higher education he moved to Bangalore. He was a thinking student and always experimented with things in a different way. In his own words, “I never wanted to be part of the crowd”. This sums up his approach and philosophy of life. His uncanny ability to grab opportunities and capacity to build good teams made him successful.

His abilities and extraordinary potential came into light, when he rose to the position of Chief Administrator from Assistant Warden and teacher merely in two years (from July 1994-Oct 1996). He never confined himself to a particular mould. When he joined as the Assistant Warden and teacher; he completely engrossed himself in the job. That was the time Guru-Shisya tradition was in shambles in the institution. He faced stiff resistance from some of the brats and spoilt students in the college, who had completely ruined the atmosphere of the college. With his grit and firm determination, he directly confronted such elements and restored academic atmosphere in the college. As a teacher, he was always in search of methods and techniques which could explain the difficult concepts to students. In this pursuit of excellence, he was always in search of day-to-day examples of his life. In a brief period, his notes became very popular. These were traits that distinguished him from others and catapulted him at higher echelons.

Once he firmly established his foothold he never looked back and within six years, he became Chairman of AVK Group of Institutions He became youngest Chairman of any educational institution in Karnataka. His academic capabilities could hardly be ignored. He has been gold medalist of all the four semesters of D.P.O.T examination. What sets him apart from the crowd? It is indeed his ability to think fast and execute things with utmost perfection that is like Symphony of Mozart.

Behind his success, lies his extraordinary skill to build a team. Leaders play a crucial role in determining the success of a team. His conduct as a leader sets the tone and standard for the rest of the members of the team. He is quite straightforward and workaholic, who believes in fast execution of work. As he says, “Build a good team and work to get it established. In this process, a leader builds up a system and ultimately, it is the system that works like an auto pilot and individuals become secondary.”

He has also been nominated by the Government of India as a Director for Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation.

His analytical abilities, amicable nature have endeared many people, including politicians, bureaucrats and media. He recognises media as a powerful medium of change and is currently the editor of National Hindi daily Janagrah. This reflects his social concern and love for the mother tongue - Hindi. His karmbhoomi has been Karnataka. At present, he is the Chairman and Managing Trustee of AVK and NSVK Group of Institutions. AVK is indeed a Gurukul in this modern era. AVK Group of Institutions offers a whole range of courses from LKG to PG. Situated in serene and calm environment of Magadi Road, the new campus offers Management courses and courses in Nursing. MBA course was started in 2009-10. The advisory board is headed by Padma Bhushana Prof. N.S. Ramaswamy, who was founder Director of IIMB.

One of the most noticeable aspects of his personality is his propensity towards helping the underprivileged. He has made available free education to many needy wards of widows and children from slums from LKG to Post Graduation. It was his inspiration that led to the launch of ‘Educate a child’ scheme, which offers scholarship for higher studies for poor and meritorious students and is a ray of hope for many who cannot afford higher education. What is most interesting is that that he provides food, accommodation, books etc absolutely free; he does not take any kind of external help for this.

Adarsh Vidya Kendra Trust, founded by him, is the only trust for Hindi language recognised by the Government of Karnataka, Bangalore University and Rajeev Gandhi Health Science for the purpose of education of Hindi speaking students in the state of Karnataka. Education and health are the most critical aspects for the development of a community or nation and it is his strong belief in giving the society has endeared many. AVK Group is helping Jharkhand in nurturing nursing education of its tribal. His social concern can be gauged from the fact that he has established a world-class school in Ballia district. The school has all high-tech features, such as satellite facilities in delivering classes.

He is an out-of-the-box thinker. He says that he never denies admission to any student in his college just because he is poor or has got poor marks. He asks, “The real test of a character of an institution lies in bringing best in the students. If you select students after tough competition and then train them, it is not a matter of pride. I have trained poor and students with average marks in my institution and many of them are at cutting edge positions scripting their success stories.”

Raeev Rai believes that politics and media are powerful medium to change the lives of people and their power should be harnessed in order to change lives of underprivileged too. However the biggest turning point in his career came when he was appointed as National Secretary of Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. He attained this position through his sheer hard work and capability. He is known as a fighter for the cause of people and he showed this trait during the latest struggle against tyrannical Mayawati government in UP. He was also arrested by the police but he did not give up his fight. His one liner became immensely quoted in newspapers, " Jinda Quome panch saal intezaar nahi karti." This was said by Ram Manohar Lohia but hogged limelight again during fight to remove Mayawati government.

It is not easy to pick his achievements as they are umpteen numbers of honours, awards, social work and recognitions. However, below is the list of few achievements, interests and social contribution.
